Are there too many z>5 Coma progenitors discovered with JWST?
Seunghwan Lim
Only a few observational studies have systematically searched for cluster progenitor candidates (a.k.a. protoclusters) at z > 5 with spectroscopic information. A recent JWST study by Helton et al. is one such study, enabling the estimation of the population’s number density for the first time up to z ~9. However, the estimated number density of 10^-5 Mpc^-3 is too high given the density of Coma-like clusters in the local volume. In this talk, using the new, large Gpc-box cosmological simulation of FLAMINGO, I will investigate this discrepancy in detail. In the presentation, the cosmic variance is also taken into account, revealing that the observed number density is in approximately 3-sigma tension with the theoretical prediction from FLAMINGO.
