Gas dynamics in high-redshift galaxies
Invited Talk: Filippo Fraternali
The study of gas dynamics in galaxies, traditionally limited to the local Universe, has now become a vital tool in understanding galaxy evolution and the connections between galaxy properties and their environment across cosmic time. By examining the rotation and turbulence of gas through various emission-line tracers, we can estimate the distribution of matter, determined the properties of the dark matter halos, and investigate galaxy scaling relations. I will present results on high-redshift rotation curves and velocity dispersions obtained from 3D reconstructions of emission-line datacubes, with a focus on ALMA observations in [CII] and CO emission lines from z=1 to z=5. These observations reveal rapid rotation and relatively low gas velocity dispersions, leading to V/sigma ratios around 10, comparable to those of nearby spiral galaxies. Finally, I will compare these observations with mock galaxies from cosmological hydrodynamical simulations and explore how the prevalence of “cold” disks at high redshifts, along with their detailed properties, is reshaping our understanding of galaxy formation in the early Universe.
